Ylang Ylang is extracted from the yellow flowers of a tall tropical tree, which grows up to 20 metres high with large, tender, fragrant flowers. In the production of Ylang Ylang oils, the first portion of the distillate is collected over several hours and is called "extra", and is considered the most superior and expensive grade, traditionally reserved for use in perfumery. The Ylang Ylang oils, grade 1 to 3 are then collected at increasing intervals of time. The first portion has the higher ester content, hence a more pleasant sweet floral odour. Grade 1 is more suitable for use in aromatherapy as a relaxant and anti-depressant as esters are chemical constituents, which have such qualities. Ylang Ylang is useful in reducing rapid breathing and heartbeat and its sedative properties are used to help lower blood pressure. It is highly beneficial for treating PMS and mood swings.
