How essential oils help with the flu

As our days of sunshine become less and we start to feel a little colder we realise that winter is really setting in. We naturally feel like slowing down and taking it a little easier and some people would happily hibernate for the entire winter if they had the opportunity!

Feeling tired can be a normal reaction at this time of the year but if you are feeling especially fatigued your body might be preparing you for a battle with the flu.

Only about 20 percent of all influenza-like illness that occurs every year is actually associated with influenza viruses because many types of respiratory illnesses with flu-like symptoms can be mistaken for influenza.  Most people will recover anywhere from three days to two weeks.

The first few days are the hardest dealing with all the body aches, pains and chills. Using essential oils all over the body can dramatically reduce the severity of the symptoms whilst also helping to boost your immune system. The calming and sedative properties of the oils also help us relax and sleep, which is one of the most healing things we can do to get us better.  


The flu is something which I very rarely have to deal with these days. Twenty five years ago when this happened it would always turn into a bronchial condition requiring a prescription of antibiotics but once I began using essential oils my health improved as my immune system responded to the benefit of the oils.  And I didn't need to use antibiotics to recover.

Aromatherapy essential oils can make a huge difference to your immune system and your recovery from the flu. It was healing for me to be able to soak in a bath with 2 capfuls of the essential oils and then go to bed for the day, waking only to apply the oils on my face and chest.  I felt calm and peaceful due to the antidepressant qualities of the oils and I was more than happy just to rest and allow my body to get better. The aches and pains became minimal and all the worriesome thoughts disappeared.

I learnt again to trust my body to repair itself naturally.

The benefits of a foot massage before bedtime

Do you like having your feet massaged before going to bed? If you do did you know that there are many health benefits that will enhance your life and add to your well-being. 

In the realm of reflexology, the key to virtually every body part lies in the sole of the foot (and additionally, the palm of the hand). By massaging your feet each night before bed, you can not only bring relief to a pair of sore feet after a long day, but bring wellness to your entire body by stimulating pressure points. It is recommended that this be enjoyed for at least 10 minutes each night using an aromatherapy essential oil blend.

Here are a few ways that foot massage can be beneficial to your health:

1. Foot Massage Promotes Mental Health and Wellness

A daily foot massage can help keep the psychological aspects of your health in balance.

According to a 1999 study performed by a team of researchers from the University of Hertfordshire and published in the Intensive and Critical Care Nursing journal, a five-minute foot massage served to bring about relaxation to critical care patients, helping to reduce their stress levels and measurably reducing blood pressure and heart rate.

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing showed that massage of the soft tissues of the hands or feet brought about emotional comfort when performed on a sample of people grieving the death of a loved one.

Further research conducted in 2013 by Australian researchers from Griffith University found that participants with a high-stress, demanding job felt reduced anxiety levels and improvement in mood following a 10-minute foot massage.

2. Foot Massage Serves as a Natural Pain Relief

Foot massage can also provide relief from pain, and not only pain in the feet.

A 2004 study published in the Pain Management Nursing journal, performed by researchers from the Indiana University School of Nursing, found that post-operative patients reported a greater reduction in their pain symptoms following a massage of the feet or hands than those who used pain medication alone.

Another study, published in the Applied Nursing Research journal in 2010, found that women given foot massage following C-section births reported reduced post-op pain as compared with the placebo group.

We just love hearing about your animal stories

Dear Cheryl,

I have been using your BE Relieved & BE Sport now for approx 12 years after a car accident I had back in 2001 that left me in a lot of pain. I use it these days for my chronic arthritis pain, it is honestly the only thing that gives me any relief so believe me when I tell you I can NOT live without either of these oils.

I have to tell you I have recently been using Be Calm on my dogs during thunder storms, my dogs are absolutely terrified of the thunder (like most dogs) and  my older dog Rebel who is now 10 years old would get so scared at times I thought he was going to die. I now rub the BE Calm on them the minute I know a storm is going to hit and as God is my witness it calms them down during the thunder.

I have recommended BE Calm to a few of my girlfriends who also have dogs that are terrified of the thunder and it has worked for them also, and like me they will never be with out it, EVER. I had tried everything from thunder shirts to Valium ( on vets recommendation) but nothing worked till BE Calm.

Neroli Essential Oil

Historical and Traditional Uses

Neroli oil is obtained from the freshly picked flowers of C. aurantium, subspecies amara by steam distillation.

The bitter orange was first cultivated in the Mediterranean by Arabs in the 10th and 11th centuries. The oil was first distilled in the early 16th century. Neroli is named after the 17th century Italian Princess of Nerola, Anna Maria de La Tremoille, who wore the oil in her gloves.

Neroli oil is one of the key essential oil in the classic Eau de Cologne, along with lavender, bergamotm, lemon and rosemary oils. This cologne was valued as a gentle tonic to the nervous system.

The flowers and the oil have been traditionally used for gastrointestinal complaints, nervous conditions, gout, sore throat, as a sedative and for sleeplessness.

Orange blossom water has traditionally been used in Europe In cooking and in skin care preparations. It is especially soothing and anti-inflammatory and has a calming and uplifting effect similar to the essential oil.

Neroli was effective in diminishing the amplitude of heart muscle contraction, benefiting people who suffer from palpitations or other types of cardiac spasms. The oil was found to reduce the symptoms associated with post-cardiac surgery patients.

What we need to know about cellulite

The greatest lamented skin condition amongst women today is cellulite.  These unsightly lumps and bumps are generally located in the upper arms, thighs, hips, buttocks, inner knees and weight-bearing areas, giving an uneven and lumpy appearance.  Cellulite is not necessarily related to obesity and very often appears on slim women.  Cellulite is not just “fat”.  When toxins and metabolic wastes are stored in connective tissue, a water retention “pouch” is created around the adipose cells to protect them against the toxins.  The surrounding connective tissue is compressed and the cellular exchanges are disturbed, collagen and elastin fibres are damaged and the fibrous tissue hardens.  More toxins mean more water retention, which means more compression, which in turn, means harder cellulite.

A Calming Approach to a Better Sleep Using Essential Oils

I think everyone at some time in their life has experienced difficulty in sleeping and this is where essential oils and aromatherapy might be of benefit. 

We all want to feel restored and refreshed when we wake up in the morning but there are many who are sleep deprived and struggle through the next day. We may put it down to stress, either work or family related or some might have 'always felt this way' and had no idea that it should feel differently. 

The short-term effects are many:

Decreased Performance and Alertness: Sleep deprivation induces significant reductions in performance and alertness. Reducing your nighttime sleep by as little as one and a half hours for just one night could result in a reduction of daytime alertness by as much as 32%.

Memory and Cognitive Impairment: Decreased alertness and excessive daytime sleepiness impair your memory and your cognitive ability -- your ability to think and process information.

Stress Relationships: Disruption of a bed partner's sleep due to a sleep disorder may cause significant problems for the relationship (for example, separate bedrooms, conflicts, moodiness, etc.).

Poor Quality of Life: You might, for example, be unable to participate in certain activities that require sustained attention, like going to the movies, seeing your child in a school play, or watching a favorite TV show.

Occupational Injury: Excessive sleepiness also contributes to a greater than twofold higher risk of sustaining an occupational injury.

Motor Vehicle Injury: If you drive after 17 hours without sleep, your performance is as bad as driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 percent. Getting up at 7 in the morning, staying awake during the day, going out in the evening and then driving home at midnight gets you to this level. Twenty four hours without sleep is as dangerous as driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent.
