Paracetamol is the most widely prescribed and recommended systemic analgesic used to relieve pain. We need more nurturing and care during the winter months.

I’ve had many people ask me what I do to keep well during the autumn and winter months.  Often when it’s cold we feel like hibernating (I know I do) which is a natural response to protect your body from the cold.  Winter is when we have to cope with more dust and dirt within our homes, as we tend to stay indoors where we are warm and cosy.  

Good organic food, vitamins, minerals and the use of essential oils and colloidal silver are what I find keeps my body in balance and boosts my immune system.  I still get sick occasionally, we all do, but I find in my case it’s more due to an emotional crisis than to my body being exposed to all the bugs and viruses.  When I do get sick it doesn’t last long, usually only 1 to 2 days whereas in the past if I came down with the flu it could last anything from a week to 2 weeks. 

Cleansing our bodies is vital to our health and well-being and certainly helps improve our immune system.

If you have some of these symptoms you may have irritable bowel disease

Essential oils can help as they are anti-inflammatory and they also relax the bowel due to their antispasmodic properties.

Around one in five Australians experiences the unpleasant symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at some time. These include abdominal pain, mucus in the stools, and alternating diarrhoea and constipation. Other terms for irritable bowel syndrome include ‘spastic colon’ and ‘irritable colon’. It seems that people with IBS have sensitive bowels that are easily ‘upset’. More women than men are prone to IBS, and symptoms tend to first occur in early adulthood.

The cause is unknown, but environmental factors such as changes of routine, emotional stress, infection and diet can trigger an attack. Research has shown that the neurotransmitter serotonin may be important in the symptoms of IBS, by altering the function of nerve cells in the bowel and causing changes in pain sensation and bowel function.

Irritable bowel syndrome doesn’t cause lasting damage and doesn’t contribute to the development of serious bowel conditions, such as cancer or colitis.

The underlying cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown, but certain factors have been found to ‘trigger’ attacks in susceptible individuals.

Many people are now having to treat themselves as the health system fails us.

When I was young I looked up to my doctor with awe and respect. To be honest I was very scared of him, but I knew never to doubt his authority over my body.  What he said was taken as truth by my mother and so if I needed medicine or treatment of any kind it was never questioned. It took many, many years for me to even realise that there were other ways to heal myself as my faith in my doctor and his allopathic system was absolute.

Now, a large percentage of people don't even have a regular doctor as our reliance on medical centres has grown due to the shortage of good general practitioners. And along with Americans, Australians are the most likely to report a medical, medication, or lab error, with 20 percent saying they've experienced one of the above over the past year. For those with chronic diseases, the rates are even higher.

You would not be human if you were not concerned about the deteriorating health care system and doctor-patient relationship. But what is the alternative?

When our medical system seems like a comedy of errors...

CARMEL'S STORY began when she tripped over the garden hose and landed on her hand.

Carmel had been filling up the water trough for her very much loved alpaca's and miniature donkeys when she came a cropper. Thinking that not much damage was done she just kept applying BE RELIEVED.

A couple of weeks later she decided to go to the doctor and have an x-ray as it was still a little tender, but not swollen. When the doctor advised that it wasn't broken she just assumed that it would take time to heal. Another couple of weeks passed and as it was still painful Carmel went back to the medical centre to have it x-rayed again by another doctor.

That was when she was told that it was broken in three places.

Can't live without your chips?

Do you love your chips but worry that they are too unhealthy? There are some things you can do to make them a better choice.

Your body's cells and tissues require a slightly alkaline environment to function properly. If you are too acidic this sets the stage for numerous conditions and diseases, including cancer, chronic fatigue and inflammation. If your body is acidic for a longer period of time the aging process will be rapidly accelerated. Your body must buffer and remove the acidic residues to maintain homeostasis. A diet high in acid-forming foods such as sugar, drinks and beverages, dairy products, alcohol, coffee, meat, poultry, fish and most grains, nuts and legumes can lead to acid buildup in your tissues.

The more we alkalise are bodies the healthier we will be.

To obtain the most nutrition and alkalizing potential from potatoes, buy organic and consume the skin, rather than peeling the skin off.  An organic baked potato seasoned with parsley, sea salt and chives is far more alkaline-forming in the body than a conventional baked potato topped with butter, sour cream or cheese. Sea salt, vegetable salt and parsley are highly alkaline-forming in the body, as are most herbs and spices. Olive oil is another alkalizing food you can use in place of butter for added flavor and richness. Butter, sour cream and cheese, however, are acid-forming foods.

And if you add a squeeze of lemon juice (my favourite!) you will be doing your body a big favour. Once consumed, when lemon juice has been fully metabolized and its minerals are dissociated in the bloodstream, its effect is alkalizing and therefore raises the pH of body tissue (pH above 7 is alkaline). 

Another tip?
Each morning start the day with a drink of warm water and lemon juice.

Adaptogens

Adaptogens are natural substances found in some plants and herbs that shield the body against the impact of stress – by balancing and harmonizing the body systems. They provide benefits which are impossible to get in any other way. They are completely unique in nature.

Essential oils work differently as they contain constituents that are both calming and stimulating.  In fact researchers have found that, depending on the state of the individual, essential oils can be either stimulating or calming.  They seem to “know” what is required of them.  So an anxious person will find they receive a calming effect from a particular oil, while another patients who is feeling listless may find a restorative effect from the same oil.  In aromatherapy, we refer to these oils as “adaptogens” because the type of effect they induce will depend on what an individual needs to restore their balance.

As much of 90% of doctor visits are either caused or related to stress. Can you imagine the great cost to our health system this causes each and every year?  

Stress has been linked to numerous illnesses and causes of death, including heart disease, cancer and suicide. Imagine if we could deal with this by ourselves in a natural way. 

The stress response is the body’s way of dealing with a perceived threat. The problem starts when the threat never leaves. And this is the kind of stress that modern society is attempting to deal with all of the time.

Typically doctors have suggested dealing with stress through the use of prescription and other sedatives. Sedatives create calm but they also dull and depress brain function. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to get a handle on the problem or real cause behind stress and take the necessary steps to deal with it. Most enlightened doctors now suggest using more natural ways in order to avoid the dependence on drugs and consequent problems associated with them.

We tend to think of stress as a state in which one can be agitated, angry, anxious, tense or fearful but, given time an individual can become listless and depressed hence the value of essential oils in being able to restore one’s balance.
